This delightful mid 19th Century brooch displays a miniature portrait of Eros and his mother Aphrodite. Marquis-shaped painted porcelain is set in 12k gold and preserved under crystal. A beautifully robed Aphrodite is seated, she appears to be reading to her child, the winged Eros. The colors are rich and vivid, and the Classical scene is very sweet. There are small cracks in the painting which in no way diminish its charm. The crystal is bezel set within a frame of gold beading, and the back of the brooch is adorned with subtle engraving. It secures with a safety clasp, and a small folding bale allows the jewel to be worn as a pendant. Bring your creativity to bear on this marvelous artifact. Circa 1850.
